PRIMADO CELEBRATES 20 YEARS WITH A SPECIAL EDITION WINE
Primado wines, crafted by the Pereira de Melo family, celebrate 20 years with the release of Primado 20, an exclusive, limited edition of 315 Magnum bottles that reflects the tradition, unique terroir of the Dão region, and exceptional ageing potential.
The Pereira de Melo family began this project in 1990 under the technical guidance of Anselmo Mendes, who later brought oenologist Patrícia Santos into the fold. The first vintage of Primado was released in 2004, and since then, the project—led by Manuel Pereira de Melo—has remained a family-driven initiative in Santa Comba Dão. With a vineyard of approximately two hectares, the oldest vines planted in 1990, Primado wines are distinguished by their limited production, focus on elegance, and celebration of the unique terroir of the region.
Primado wines are made from traditional Dão grape varieties, such as Touriga Nacional, Encruzado, and Alfrocheiro, embodying the authenticity of the granitic soils and climatic conditions that impart unmistakable characteristics to these labels. These wines are ideal companions for meals, offering enjoyment both in their youth and after some bottle ageing. Fresh and elegant, they stand out for their authenticity. The producer highlights the value placed on the vineyards, where each plot is cultivated with respect for the natural features of the region.
Among the standout labels are the white blend of Encruzado and Malvasia Fina, the rosé (a blend of varieties including Touriga Nacional and Jaen), and more complex reds such as Primado Family Cellar Edition 2013.
PRIMADO RED 20
The highlight of this anniversary is the release of the Primado 20 red wine, a special commemorative edition celebrating 20 years of production. Limited to just 315 Magnum bottles, each is priced at €120.
This wine is a blend of harvests from the past 20 years, each comprising traditional varieties: Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro, Jaen, and Tinta Pinheira. It is crafted using traditional foot-treading in granite lagares. Each harvest underwent a minimum of 12 months’ ageing in stainless steel, followed by at least 12 months in French oak barrels, and culminated in extended bottle ageing in Magnum format.
This red wine is a celebration of the Dão’s essence, showcasing intense aromas of forest fruits, woodland notes, spices, and a floral touch. On the palate, it offers youthfulness, freshness, and remarkable elegance, with velvety tannins and a complexity that promises long ageing potential.
It is a wine perfect for accompanying special occasions, such as the upcoming festive season.
